Choosing Wisely: changing the way we prescribe
Proposal 1: GPs will ask patients if they are willing to buy certain medicines or products which can be bought without a prescription.
We are proposing that it would be reasonable for most patients to buy the medicines and products on the list below over the counter without a prescription. Under the proposal GPs will ask patients if they are willing to buy these medicines and products as they are now widely available and, in most cases, available at a very affordable price.
Full list of medicines and products we are including in proposal one:
- Acne treatment
- Antifungal skin products
- Artificial saliva
- Barrier creams
- Benzydamine mouthwash
