Latent TB Awareness Programme
Harrow has one of the highest rates of TB across London and the country as a whole. About 1 in 5 patients who have been tested have been found to be positive and about 5% of these have an active disease, which is a risk to others in Harrow.
Harrow CCG is working alongside Voluntary Action Harrow Co-op to map local community groups and populations who are at high risk of TB. Working together, we are seeking to raise awareness, tackle stigma, and improve access to Latent Tuberculosis Infection (LTBI) tests and treatment amongst BME communities in Harrow. Latent TB is when TB bacteria are asleep in your body, but can become active in the future, making you ill.
Voluntary Action Harrow Co-op is working to identify organisations providing support to populations at risk, share this information with the CCG and proactively make contact with them with regards to the programme.
They are also working to raise awareness and tackle stigma among populations at high risk and who could self-present to health services through:
- focusing on targeted awareness-raising of symptoms and curability of TB, local health and care services available and eligibility for free treatment
- use of community workers and health advocates to signpost and facilitate access to local services
- Latent TB infection (LTBI) awareness training sessions.
In order to improve access to services, Voluntary Action Harrow Co-op is raising awareness in selected BME community groups to target eligible people for Latent TB Infection (LTBI) testing.
